Climbing Above the Clouds
A Mystic Gravel Ride Scaling Steep Rocky Trails
Whenever I’m in the mood to tackle challenging gravel trails, Pizzo Manolfo is my go-to mountain. I can see its majestic silhouette from my home, and each time I peek out my window, I'm overcome with the urge to change into my biking gear and venture up its rocky paths.
Pizzo Manolfo is part of a cherished nature preserve in Palermo, well-known among local off-road riders. It boasts a labyrinth of trails that lead to three stunning peaks, making it an ideal day trip destination for nature lovers and gravel enthusiasts alike. The trails feature significant vertical grades, providing a challenge for riders of all skill levels.
However, a few years ago, a large portion of the mountain was completely devastated by a wildfire. The lower section still bears the scars of that destruction; where a dense pine forest once stood, only blackened trunks and barren branches remain, creating an eerie yet striking landscape. Nevertheless, nature has a remarkable way of healing itself. Slowly, vibrant green undergrowth is beginning to transform the terrain once more.
As I exit the haunting remnants of the pine forest, the scenery magically shifts into a eucalyptus grove. Many may find this surprising, but these trees were planted in Sicily centuries ago for their ability to drain swampy areas and reduce the mosquito population, which once carried malaria.
The final ascent to the summit is a challenging trail littered with sharp rocks, but the sense of accomplishment upon reaching the top is incomparable.
Today’s ride was particularly majestic, enhanced by fog banks swirling through the peaks. When you find yourself on a challenging trail, enveloped in misty fog, silence all around, and the fragrant hints of spring blossoms mixed with the sea breeze, it’s impossible not to feel one with nature. In moments like these, the strain of the climb fades away, and I feel as if I am floating on my bike, gliding effortlessly towards the summit.
Every time I embark on this mountain journey, I’m reminded of why I started cycling in the first place. I hope my experiences inspire you to get outside, explore, and discover the same profound connection to nature that fuels my passion for writing, cycling and photography.
