Dirt, rocks, steep climbs, sun, and breathtaking views!

Part of my cycling journey has always been fueled by the spirit of exploration, and this past Sunday didn’t disappoint.

I set out on this ride with my friend Sergio, an experienced cycling guide I’ve come to know through my cycling club and have had the pleasure of working with over the past year. Instead of our usual long-distance rides that push my limits, we opted for a shorter morning ride not far from Palermo, up Monte Palmeto.

We began our ride in the charming village of Borgo Parrini, which has been transformed in recent years by local artists into a vibrant canvas of colorful murals, mosaics, and Sicilian folk art. After a brief ride inland, we tackled the steep gravel ascent of Monte Palmeto, navigating through a small forest of cluster pines, sheer rock formations, dwarf palms, and Mediterranean scrub.

As we gained elevation, the vegetation began to dwindle, and the trail twisted through rocky patches, dirt, and a few mud puddles, leading us to several panoramic viewpoints. On one side, we enjoyed a stunning view of the coastline and Palermo’s airport; on the other, the breathtaking valley surrounded by the mountains near Partinico.

During our descent, which was bumpy at times, we encountered herds of local Cinisara cows, were chased by a few dogs, got muddy, and even crossed a small river. It was the perfect recipe for a gravel adventure.

Ultimately, the morning unfolded into a short ride filled with the essence of gravel cycling, all under the Sicilian sun and in great company.

As I look back on that morning, I’m reminded of the unique blend of challenge and beauty that gravel riding offers. Each climb reveals a new perspective, and every descent holds a story waiting to be told. This ride wasn’t just about conquering a trail; it was about appreciating the stunning landscapes of Sicily, connecting with friends, and embracing the adventure that awaits around every corner. I can’t wait to explore more of these hidden gems and share the journey with all of you—who knows what my next ride will uncover?

-Mike.
